Great writing! Informative and insightful!

Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024

I bought this book since my son is a competitive basketball player, going into high school. The book is well-written with personal author experiences that draws in the reader. After being in the stands with other basketball parents for 4 years, I can relate to each type of parent mentioned in this book.

The author is intelligent and athletic, which is a rare combination, excelling in education with a PhD and excelling in his basketball playing/coaching career.

I really enjoyed many of the quotes that he used throughout the book, as I can personally relate to many of them.

It addressed many aspects of over-stepping your child's desires and ability in competitive sports. Not every child will make it to the NBA, NFL, MLB professional player status. And, I have seen many parents pushing kids from an early age to be the best in order to get a college scholarship, and play in the pros. This book discusses those pitfalls and mental stain on kids when they fall short of their parent expectations.

One of my favorite quotes cited in this book is “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou

And, Dr. Coach has done just that with this book. He did better!

As a teacher and coach, now retired, I appreciate the author's candor about working with young athletes and their parents. I met the author as we were both traveling across the country and found him to be a kind and engaging person who wants the best for his students. Experienced with athletes of all levels, from beginner to professional, the coach who is also an American soldier, encourages students to strive to be the best that they can be.

A MUST READ‼️

Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024

As a former college coach myself, this book was such a joy to read and gave me such a better perspective from both the coaches view and now as a parent of two competitive sports loving boys. It is so easy to get carried away with your parent colored glasses on and this book really made me look at things differently in my role as a parent. If I was still a coach, this might be a required book for all parents in my program.

When honesty meets fun!

Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024

An insightful, introspective look into adult/adolescent relationships misguided by perception and expectation bias. The author exploits his own past vulnerabilities to convey the perils of human nature - good and bad. It takes 30 years to gain 30 years of experience. There are no shortcuts. However, “Doc” provides us a game plan for life to identify and correct our “glasses” for ultimate success. A must read!

There are still things to learn from this book! Sports coaches aren't the only ones who run into disbelieving parents who feel their child can do no wrong. Classroom teachers face this daily. “It's only natural” isn't really an excuse, but it is a statement of fact, and this book offer great tools to deal with a plethora issues.
